Live from Houston!

Posted under Chronicles of Australia, Trips

Interesting enough some airports are offering free internet, not very common but if you’re curious enough you can find them. At the Sydney airport look for a the Qantas lounge and if you have a frequent flyer number you can connect. In San Francisco I didn’t get any (although you can get some free internet around the city), I’m in Houston right now waiting for my flight to Villahermosa and Continental is offering free wireless only in its boarding gates.

Houston wireless seems to be the best, since I could even call my family on Skype!!

Street view

Posted under Chronicles of Australia, IT Channel, Trips

Just a few minutes before I leave to the airport and I was checking in Google maps my accommodation in San Francisco, and I found incredibly handy the street views. I could virtually walk from Union Square to Post Street and now I have an idea how to get there from the train station, so probably I’ll catch only the train since is a short stroll.

OK this blogger has a trip to complete, see you on the other side of the ocean.

Bunyip

Posted under IT Channel

And passing to the good news, I finished my project the last component of the master’s degree. Indeed, a couple of day is advance, you know me. I like giving interesting names to my programs and databases, I’m not very fond of acronyms, so I named this one Bunyip. While developing the name was Wami and the sources and the database are still named like that, but I think Bunyip is far cooler. My presentation is this Friday 8:25pm, E6A building, and anyone can attend. Here some screenshots:

Recovery

Posted under Personal

The rain stopped and the rivers are getting back, however the city centre of my home city is still with some water. If we’re lucky, maybe tomorrow our house can be dry, although I guess the electricity will not be restored for security. It has been a chaotic week in Villahermosa, fortunately many services are being restored little by little, although we don’t know how bad the economy will be after all this.

Flooded Villahermosa

Posted under Personal

Yesterday was a long day for my home city. Unfortunately the city centre was completely flooded and my family had to left our home. Some friends are in the same situation and I tried to ring my friend Sarai and I couldn’t find her, so I hope she’s fine. Is someone still suggests that climate changes are not real, well let me tell you that there are no records in the history of the city of a situation of this magnitude (and it is a 411-year old city). The situation is so critical that at some parts of the city there are like 3 metres of water when a bad bad flood in those areas would be 50cm. Our house was not in a floodable area, and now there are like 2 metres of water. According to the last report around 80% of our city, the state capital, is under water.

Sadly I can’t do anything about it from here, so I’m just contacting family and friends and watching the TV to see what’s happening. On the local TV I saw this aereal view of the city.

This is Paseo Tabasco yesterday around the same corner of last picture just on the opposite direction. Right now the water should be 1.5 metre higher.
