Skiiiiii!

Posted under Chronicles of Australia

One of the most unusual things you can do in Australia is skiing on snow! Yeah, it sounds weird, but there are Snowy Mountains around 400 km south of Sydney. “Snowy” really means heaps of snow, like 1.5 metres. So, I guess is going to be fun, I’ve never skied before and probably I never expected to do it in a place like Australia but there you go, this country is rare. So I should be in Jindabyne tonight. I’m going to catch a bus after work.

I’ll be back on Monday :)

Beijing 2008

Posted under Personal

The Olympics started and the freaky Chinese alphabet made me stay until late to watch the Mexican delegation to pass almost at the end. Apparently the order is based on the number of strokes of the last symbol of the name of the country, or some sort of that.

By the way, I just read in Slashdot that some fireworks in the opening ceremony were actually computer generated.  Oh China, we love you because you’ve mastered the art of faking :). Oh, a bit of black humour: how the Beijing 2008 was actually created.

Note to my Chinese friends: China is a great country no offence intended.

Note to my non-Chinese friends: Offence intended.

Google Street View

Posted under Chronicles of Australia, IT Channel

Finally Google Street View made it to Australia! The best is that not only the major cities are mapped but even small towns and suburbs. I could find my office in the city (AAMI building, second level above the ANZ), our house in Epping (the house with the garage for two cars) and of course the amazing views of Sydney Harbour. Also I peeked into Catherine’s, James’ and this is the closest I could get to Joe’s.

Yeah I know it’s a bit scary but it’s all fun and certainly a great help for those that haven’t visited Australia, much better than the satellite pictures.

“Chuck the sickie”

Posted under Personal

I like the Australian expression “chuck the sickie”, although it means to take the day off for illness, mostly it implies to fake illness to take the day off. Fortunately chuking the sickies is easier than ever thanks to this website. Of course, the website says that you should not use the fake certificate for illegal purposes *wink* *wink*

Uhmm I wonder how is the weather in the Gold Coast…
